The Weather Friends Are Knocking: A Sensory Storytelling Experience for ECSE & Preschool

3 min read

If you’ve ever wished your weather unit felt more engaging, more accessible, and more sensory‑rich for your learners with multiple disabilities, you’re going to love this one. “The Weather Friends Are Knocking” started as a simple idea — a playful, predictable story where each type of weather “knocks” on the door and brings a sensory experience with it. But it quickly grew into a full storytelling pack designed for ECSE classrooms, preschool special education, AAC users, and blind/low‑vision learners.

This resource blends storytelling, music, tactile exploration, and communication support into one cohesive experience that works beautifully in morning meeting, small groups, or sensory story time.

🌬️ Why Sensory Stories Work So Well in ECSE

Sensory stories give students multiple ways to connect with content:

  • Tactile cues help learners with visual impairments or sensory‑seeking needs

  • Repetition and rhythm support language development

  • Predictable structure reduces anxiety and increases participation

  • AAC‑friendly routines give emerging communicators a clear role

  • Hands‑on exploration keeps students engaged longer

Weather is already a naturally sensory topic — wind, rain, snow, thunder, sun — so it’s the perfect theme for a multi‑sensory experience.

📘 Inside the Story: “The Weather Friends Are Knocking”

Each page introduces a new “weather friend” who knocks on the door and brings a sensory cue:

  • Wind — whoooosh, whoooosh

  • Rain — pitter patter

  • Snow — shhhh… soft

  • Storm — boom… boom

  • Sun — warm and bright

Students get to feel, hear, and act out each type of weather, making the story accessible for a wide range of abilities.

🎵 The Weather Friends Song

To extend the learning, the pack includes a simple, catchy song that mirrors the story structure. Songs are powerful for:

  • building anticipation

  • supporting memory

  • encouraging vocal play

  • creating predictable routines

There’s also a call‑and‑response AAC version, so every student has a way to participate — even if they use one‑word buttons or core vocabulary.

Visuals, Vocabulary Cards & Pointing Cards

To support comprehension and communication, the pack includes:

  • Full‑page vocabulary cards with tactile cue suggestions

  • Student pointing cards for weather discussions

  • Simple, clean visuals that work for mixed‑ability groups

These tools help students label weather, make choices, and participate in circle time with confidence.

🖐️ Built‑In Tactile Cues for Multi‑Sensory Learning

Each weather type includes a suggested tactile cue, such as:

  • ribbon streamers for wind

  • beaded strands or tapping for rain

  • cotton or cool cloth for snow

  • drum or vibration for thunder

  • warm textured circle for sun

These cues support learners who rely on touch, movement, or sound to access content.

🎯 Who This Resource Is Designed For

This pack is especially helpful for:

  • ECSE classrooms

  • Preschool special education

  • Students with multiple disabilities

  • Blind/low‑vision learners

  • AAC users

  • Sensory story groups

  • Morning meeting weather routines

If you teach a mixed‑ability group, this resource gives every student a way to join in.

💛 Why I Created This Resource

I wanted a weather unit that wasn’t just “talking about weather” — I wanted something students could feel, hear, touch, and experience. Something that honored the needs of learners who communicate differently, move differently, or access the world differently.

This storytelling pack grew out of that desire to make weather learning joyful, sensory‑rich, and accessible for all.
